MMUST’s Dr. Rose Opiyo Joins Continental Panel of Experts Selected to Serve on Pan-African University Master’s Admissions Selection Jury
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has once again earned continental recognition following the appointment of one of its distinguished scholars, Dr. Rose Atieno Opiyo, to a high-level academic role within the Pan-African University (PAU). Dr. Opiyo, the Associate Dean of the School of Education, has been selected to serve as the Representative of East Africa on the expert evaluation committee for the prestigious Master’s Admissions Selection Jury at the Pan-African University’s Institute of Governance, Humanities and Social Sciences (PAUGHSS). Armed with vast experience in research, mentorship, and academia, Dr. Opiyo brings to the jury a wealth of expertise in academic evaluation, a strong commitment to fairness and excellence in the selection process. Her role will involve evaluating applications from across Africa, ensuring that only the most qualified and deserving candidates are admitted into PAU’s competitive Master’s programmes.
The appointment, formally communicated on 2nd March 2026 through PAUGHSS, places Dr. Opiyo among a select panel of scholars entrusted with identifying Africa’s next generation of leaders in governance, humanities, and social sciences. This significant recognition is courtesy of her expertise in social policy and translational science.
The Pan-African University, an initiative of the African Union, is renowned for advancing excellence in higher education, research, and innovation across the continent. Through its network of five specialized institutes, PAU offers fully funded postgraduate programmes designed to nurture the continent’s leaders, scholars, and innovators. The PAUGHSS institute, jointly hosted by the University of Yaoundé II and the University of Buea in Cameroon, stands as a premier hub for graduate training in governance, humanities, and social sciences. Its programmes focus on key areas such as Governance and Regional Integration, Conference Interpreting, Translation, Trans-border Languages, and Intercultural Communication fields that are central to Africa’s unity and sustainable development.
On 9th to 12th March 2026, Dr. Opiyo participated in the rigorous selection exercise held at the Defence Hall, PAUGHSS Campus, University of Yaoundé II-Soa in Cameroon. The exercise brought together leading academics and governance experts from across Africa to assess candidates competing for this continental most competitive and prestigious postgraduate scholarship opportunities. Serving alongside fellow Kenyan scholar, Prof. Patrick Muthengi Muthoka of the University of Nairobi, Dr. Opiyo contributed to a meticulous and merit-based evaluation process. The selection drew applicants from both Anglophone and Francophone Africa, requiring panelists to apply a high level of academic judgment, cultural sensitivity, and commitment to the ideals of Pan-Africanism.
Following an intensive evaluation process, the selection jury admitted 31 exceptional scholars into the 2026 cohort. These successful candidates will undertake fully funded Master’s programmes, benefiting from comprehensive support that includes tuition, living stipends, travel allowances, and medical insurance. Beyond financial support, the programme offers access to a vibrant Pan-African network of scholars, policymakers, and change-makers.
Reflecting on her experience, Dr. Opiyo described the process as both enriching and impactful, noting that it highlighted the critical role of social sciences in strengthening governance and advancing regional integration across Africa. She emphasized the importance of inclusivity, as the selection brought together candidates from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
“Being part of this historic panel is not just a professional honor but a responsibility to Africa. Every student we select carries the hopes of a continent. What made this selection exercise uniquely significant was its continental scope; candidates were drawn from both Anglophone and Francophone Africa, requiring panelists to use extraordinary range and cross-cultural sensitivity,” said Dr. Opiyo.
She also observed a gap in Kenyan student representation among the applicants shortlisted for interviews, despite strong representation at the panel level. She called for increased awareness, mentorship, and deliberate preparation to encourage more qualified students to seize such continental opportunities.
Certainly, her appointment stands as a proud moment for the University, and positions Dr. Opiyo as a valuable mentor to students aspiring to join the Pan-African University. It also depicts her outstanding expertise and commitment to academic excellence. MMUST continues to encourage qualified students to pursue such opportunities, as part of its commitment to advancing academic excellence and contributing to Africa’s development.
