MMUST’s First-Year Orientation Culminates in Matriculation Ceremony, Marking the Start of a New Academic Journey

The orientation of first-year students at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) culminated in a Matriculation Ceremony presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, formally ushering over 7,000 first-year students into the University community. The ceremony was graced by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development, Hon. Susan Auma Mang’eni, who joined the University community in welcoming and celebrating the new students as they embarked on their academic journey.

Addressing the students, the Principal Secretary challenged them to embrace an entrepreneurial mindset, urging them to start small, identify opportunities, turn ideas into viable ventures and create value even with limited resources. Hon. Mang’eni further called on universities to consider incorporating entrepreneurship as a common course for all students, equipping graduates across disciplines with the skills and mindset needed to create opportunities and contribute to economic growth.

In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo warmly welcomed the first-year students to MMUST, reminding them that their university journey is more than earning a degree, it is about building knowledge, competence, character and purpose. He challenged the students to take their academics seriously, embrace research and innovation, use technology responsibly, uphold integrity and make wise choices. Prof. Shibairo also encouraged the new ‘MMUSTIANS’ to look beyond employment and become problem-solvers, innovators and responsible leaders who create value and contribute to society. “As you begin your journey, learn deeply, live honorably and leave a legacy. The person you will become at graduation is shaped by the choices you make today,” said Prof. Shibairo.

The successful matriculation ceremony was organized by the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, led by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hussein Golicha, in collaboration with the Office of the Registrar, Academic Affairs, headed by Prof. Judah Ndiku. The Matriculation Ceremony marked a significant milestone in the students’ transition into university life.

The colorful ceremony was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning, Research and Innovation, Prof. Christopher Ngacho, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and Finance, who was represented by Prof. Maurice Vincent Omolo and the Principal, MMUST TVET College, Prof. Stephen Odebero. The event also brought together members of the University Management Board and Senate, Directors, members of staff, and MMUSO Student leaders, who joined the University community in welcoming and celebrating the new cohort of students.

Welcoming his fellow comrades, the MMUSO President, Mr. Valentine Obade, urged the students to use their newfound freedom responsibly, remain focused on their academic goals, adhere to University rules and regulations, and make choices that contribute positively to their personal growth and success. He encouraged them to embrace discipline, respect one another and make the most of the opportunities available to them throughout their university journey.

The Matriculation Ceremony marked the culmination of a week-long orientation programme designed to facilitate a smooth transition and acquaint the students with the academic, social and institutional environment at MMUST.
