Commission for University Education Kicks Off Regular Institutional Quality Audit at MMUST

Delegates from the Commission for University Education (CUE), led by Prof. Raphael Munavu, have today-14 November, 2023, commenced a 4-day Regular Institutional Quality Audit at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. The CUE team paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor-Prof. Solomon Shibairo, and later met members of the University Management Board as well as the Senate. Some of the things that the delegates will be looking into during this period are governance and management, finance, human resources and quality assurance systems.

While giving an overview of the University during the courtesy call, Prof. Shibairo pointed out that this exercise will add value to MMUST, and assured CUE of the University’s cooperation throughout the process. “MMUST is doing very well and has made significant progress since the last institutional audit in 2018,” said the Vice Chancellor.

“We are here to assess the University and determine whether it has delivered on its mandate. I guarantee you that this is a competent team which has done this activity in the past, and will ensure that MMUST benefits from the audit,” stated Prof. Munavu, adding that the Commission is committed to enhancing the education output in the country.

The first presentation of the day, which was on the Governance and Management of the University, was made by the Director of Quality Assurance- Prof. Danstone Lilechi Barasa, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. It highlighted the MMUST Vision, Mission, organogram, the quality policy statement, as well as the University reference materials. Additionally, Prof. Barasa pointed out that MMUST’s ISO 9001:2015 has been renewed for the next three (3) years, with effect from 10th November, 2023.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs)-Prof. Hussein Golicha, whose Division is spearheading the audit, stated that the University has been looking forward to this exercise. Prof. Golicha presented on academic matters, including, academic programmes offered in various Schools, and student enrollment, assessment, support services.

In his presentation, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration and Finance)-Prof. Kuria Thuo showcased the University’s infrastructure and financial resources. Further, he noted that MMUST remains one of the few Universities in Kenya doing well in terms of financial prudence. Equally, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Research and Innovation)-Prof. Charles Mutai discussed the status of research in the University, where he stated that MMUST has attracted several research, training as well as equipment grants. He also mentioned that the University has carried out a number of Corporate Social Responsibilities, secured Intellectual Property Rights and signed Memoranda of Understanding with many organizations.

Day one (1) of the institutional audit culminated in interviews with students, academic staff and administrative staff. The CUE Regular Institutional Quality Audit at MMUST is set to end on Friday, 17th November, 2023.
