MMUST Partners with National Research Fund for Ceremonial Tree Planting Exercise in Implementation of the Presidential Directive

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has partnered with the National Research Fund (NRF) for a ceremonial tree-planting exercise to implement the Presidential Directive. The NRF Chairman, Prof. Ratemo Michieka, led the NRF board members and the University team in planting trees on the University’s Approved land.   The activity is geared towards realizing the Government’s initiative of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 to reduce greenhouse emissions and stop and reverse deforestation in the country.

Prof. Michieka was accompanied by the Ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Research and Innovation) Prof. Josephine Ngaira who represented the Vice Chancellor. The NRF Board members included NRF CEO- Prof. Dickson Andala, Prof. Robert Gateru, and Prof. Walter Oyawa.

Prof. Ngaira underscored the importance of the exercise stating that for a sustainable economy, the forest cover plays an important role in enhancing the growth of all sectors especially as we work towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals. Similarly, Prof. Michieka applauded the University for playing a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of climate change.

“Planting trees is a very essential activity we need to engage in to contribute to the health of this planet,” he added.

MMUST has adopted the tree planting initiative and is committed to being part of the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign. During this exercise, a total number of 500 trees were planted.
