MMUST played a vital role in hosting the first ever Annual Career and Job Expo 2018 that saw over 5000 youth in attendance, on 18th to 19th May 2018. This was part of collaborative efforts by the Office of the Kakamega Senator, Hon. Cleophas Malala, and MMUST management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fred Otieno. This was aimed at empowering the youth and ensuring that career knowledge is directly imparted on them for a better generation.
During the two-day event, youth from across the country flocked in MMUST and got in-depth knowledge from different companies, who exhibited products while advising them on available career opportunities.
The chief guest, Speaker of Senate, Hon. Ken Lusaka commended the youth empowerment event as an important issue that could help address high unemployment rates among Kenyan youth. He pressed on the need for the youth to incubate entrepreneural skills, which would help eradicate the high unemployment rates.
Senator Malala thanked the youth for attending the event that would help turn around their lives in terms of job acquisition. He said he was pursuing a situation whereby youth in the country would not spend money to acquire jobs. Other facilitators who graced the occassion included the Youth Senate President, Hon. Gideon Keter, Mumias Sugar Company CEO, Nahashon Aseka, and reknown KTN News anchor Akisa Wandera.
Prof. Otieno thanked the main organizer, Senator Malala, for settling on the institution as the host of this first ever event, nationally. He said that such events would help most students understand available career opportunities for their respective courses. He noted that MMUST had already strategically instituted the Centre for Curriculum Support, Career Development and Placement (CUSCADEP), headed by Dr. Teresa A Okoth-Oluoch, which specializes in enhancing career knowledge and opportunities among MMUST students.
