MMUST Red Cross Chapter Excels in First Aid Competitions

The Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Red Cross Chapter recently achieved outstanding results in both county and regional First Aid competitions. Under the guidance of their patron, Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko, the MMUST chapter emerged the best in the county competition held on July 27, 2024, at Kakamega Primary School, qualifying for the regional level competition, which took place on August 6, 2024, in Kisumu. There, they faced off against Victoria KMTC and secured the second-best position. MMUST presented to two teams at the competitions and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is set to represent the University at the National level next year.

The competitions comprised both theoretical and practical components where the participants were evaluated on their ability to assess emergencies, perform critical first aid procedures, and demonstrate effective communication under pressure. The MMUST team, consisting of five dedicated members—Elkanah Mgaza, Ronald Odero, Rubby Kellen, Beatrice Ngusu, and Venesa Amikato—demonstrated exceptional skills and teamwork throughout the events.

“Supporting our students in these competitions not only enhances their skills in emergency response but also prepares them for real-world challenges. Their determination and teamwork are commendable,” said Dr. Nyandiko.

At the regional competition, MMUST excelled by achieving the best results in practical exercises and finishing second in the theoretical category. Mr. Samuel Okongo, the chairperson of the club and a student from the School of Nursing, expressed gratitude to the University Management for their support.

“This victory is not just about winning; it is about the invaluable experience we have gained and the networks we have built. Together, we will continue to elevate MMUST's reputation in future competitions,” he said. Ms. Rubby Kellen, a participant in the competition, echoed this sentiment, attesting to the experiences they gained during the events.

“Our success reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire team. We proudly represent MMUST and look forward to participating in more competitions that challenge us to grow. Participating in these competitions has been an incredible learning experience. The knowledge and skills we have acquired will undoubtedly shape our future healthcare and emergency response careers,” she stated.

The event included various scenarios, from CPR techniques to handling trauma situations, and was judged by experienced medical professionals and emergency responders. The team’s success is a testament to their dedication and the quality of training the Red Cross provides.

In addition to these achievements, on September 26th, 2024, the Kenya Red Cross Kakamega branch in partnership with Kenya Red Cross- MMUST Chapter held an awareness session on Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) at the University lecture hall. This event aimed to educate participants about the various aspects of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), empowering them with the knowledge and resources needed to protect themselves and the community. Led by a volunteer from the Kakamega branch's Regional Disaster Response Team- Ms. Beryl Migare, the session fostered an open dialogue, encouraging participants to share their thoughts and experiences in a supportive atmosphere.

The program included a comprehensive presentation outlining the definitions of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), relevant statistics, and legal frameworks. Participants engaged in interactive discussions, exploring barriers to reporting incidents and identifying community responsibilities in prevention and support. Key lessons learned included a deeper understanding of the vulnerabilities faced by certain groups, the importance of informed consent, and the need for effective reporting mechanisms. The event successfully raised awareness and established a foundation for ongoing discussions about Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), ensuring participants were left equipped with valuable resources and support contacts.

The MMUST Red Cross Chapter's impressive achievements in first aid competitions and community education initiatives underscore the University's commitment to developing well-rounded individuals who are equipped to address health emergencies and social challenges. By fostering a culture of learning and support, MMUST not only enhances the skills of its students but also contributes positively to the wider community, reinforcing its role as a leader in both academic and social responsibility. As they celebrate these achievements, the Chapter continues to remind everyone that; ‘Preparedness starts with knowledge, but they are skilled to help.’
