MMUST Hosts Youth Devolution Festival in a Bid to Empower Youths for National Development

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) hosted the Youth Devolution Festival on 22nd November 2024 at the University Multipurpose Hall (MPH). The remarkable event graced by the Principal Secretary of, the State Department for Devolution, Mrs. Teresia Mbaika, brought together youths from diverse backgrounds to discuss critical topics on development and inclusivity in Kenya. The event was also attended by the Special Advisor to the Prime Cabinet Secretary- Kibisu Kabatesi, and Nandi Women Representative- Hon. Cynthia Muge. The event was also attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs)- Prof. Hussein Golicha, who was representing the Vice-Chancellor. In a bid to spur the Greening Initiative amongst the youths, the event was commemorated with a tree planting exercise under the theme, ‘Securing Devolution through Broadening and Deepening Meaningful Youth Inclusion.’

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Mbaika, pointed out that youths play a pivotal role in building Kenya's economy, noting their dominance in the population. She also applauded MMUST management for their commitment to empowering youths through incorporating new technology and innovative programs to develop their skills and unlock their potential. “The government is committed to job creation for youths through collaborations with higher education institutions and other sectors, particularly those that are focusing on the creative economy, technology, and innovation,” she emphasized.

Mr. Kabatesi who also represented the Prime Cabinet Secretary H.E Hon. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi commended MMUST for its efforts in nurturing strong leaders. He recognized the pivotal role young leaders play in driving change in Kenya urging them to join forces in developing the nation.

“Our country can do better if we diversify agro-technology. I want to recognize youths as digital natives who have advanced with technology. Let us all take this opportunity to collaborate and foster creativity and innovation to enable job creation,” he said.

Prof. Golicha underscored MMUST's dedication to training youths for the future job market by aligning their programs with current trends and technological advancements. He encouraged youths to utilize their time effectively for academic and economic development.

“As a University we are committed to the competitiveness of all the youths across the country. Our journey towards this has been marked by continued research, innovation, and adaptation to the current technological developments,” he said.

Dr. Edward Mugalavai, the Coordinator of the MMUST Greening Initiative, lauded the youths for integrating tree planting into the program, advising them to extend this practice to their communities. He emphasized that devolving environmental conservation efforts is critical for enhancing climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The festival focused on several key topics including youth inclusion in job creation, food security, health advocacy, social accountability, and climate change mitigation through creative economy, technology, and innovation.

The Youth Devolution Festival at MMUST served as a platform to amplify the voice of youths in national development. It underscored the importance of innovation, leadership, and environmental conservation in shaping a sustainable future. MMUST remains at the forefront of training and empowering youths to rise to the challenges of the evolving job market and contribute meaningfully to the country's development.
