Famously known as ‘The wolves’, the Kakamega Ultimate Frisbee club was founded back in October 2016, by MMUST students who went against all odds and brought this unique sport into the university sporting family.
Frisbee has its roots in the United State of America (USA), from early 1960s. Over time, the game has grown and become a common game in the western countries. Later on, it spread to Africa. The first pioneer countries were South Africa, Uganda and Tanzania. Its interest among people grew and the game landed in Kenya. It was picked up by few players in Nairobi and Kisumu County, and today, it is with us in MMUST, under the leadership of Mr. Moses Njatha and Mr. Victor Obiero as team managers and Phena Odoyo and Victor Omondi as the team captains, respectively. Despite it being an upcoming sporting activity in MMUST, the club has performed tremendously and come June they will be participating in the 2019 All Africa Ultimate Championships, which will be held in Johannesburg in South Africa.
The team is driven by the slogan, ‘the spirit of the game’. This slogan works as their main objective. It is what pushes them to win most of their game. They put their focus on enhancing unity at the end of the game since the slogan strives for fair and competitive game free of hostility during the game. Everyone’s happiness is a priority in this sport. It is worth noting that the slogan helped them win the Spirit Award in the 7-Hills Classic Ultimate Tournament in Entebbe, Uganda in September 2017. Kakamega Wolves has participated in both local and international tourneys. They recently emerged victorious at the first ever Kenyan National Ultimate Frisbee Championship held in Nairobi in December 2018.
In addition to participating in tournaments in other Universities within Kenya and other countries, Kakamega Ultimate Wolves has ever hosted a 4-mini tournament in MMUST grounds in March 2017 where they showed potential and finished fourth. They also hosted a 6-team tourney dubbed Crying Stones in January 2018. Internationally, they have been consistently on the Frisbee East Africa Sand Tournaments. They played in the 10th and 11th editions respectively they managed to get a bronze medal. In 2017, the team sent some players to play in All Africa Ultimate Club Championship fun team. The team however wishes to thank the university management for their continued support. As an upcoming sport, they have many other requirements which they say if they can get from any other well-wisher, it can boost their morale to perform even better.
