MMUST Researcher Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko Leads Development of African Union Strategy on Climate Change and Human Mobility
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) researcher, Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko, has led the development of the African Union Strategy on Climate Change and Human Mobility. This is a continental framework aimed at addressing the growing intersection between climate change and human movement across Africa. Dr. Nyandiko served as the sole Lead Consultant in the development of this Strategy, spearheaded by the African Union Commission (AUC), through its Labour and Migration Division, with support from the German development agency, GIZ. The development of the Strategy culminated in a validation meeting held from 14th to 16th October 2026 at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa-Ethiopia. It brought together key stakeholders to review and validate the continental framework ahead of its progression to the next stage of political process, including consideration for final adoption by the Africa Union Heads of State and Government.
The Strategy was developed through an extensive, year-long consultative process that brought together African Union Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), academia, civil society organizations and other key stakeholders. The process incorporated diverse perspectives from across the continent to form a coordinated approach to managing human mobility in the context of climate change.

The Strategy seeks to mitigate the risks associated with adverse climate impacts on human mobility while harnessing the potential of human movement to strengthen resilience, promote inclusive growth and advance sustainable development across Africa. As climate change continues to affect livelihoods, ecosystems and communities, the framework provides a foundation for strengthening policy coordination, regional cooperation and responses that address the needs of populations affected by climate-related challenges.
Dr. Nyandiko expressed pride in contributing to the landmark initiative as one of the lead consultants, acknowledging the African Union Commission, GIZ and all stakeholders whose expertise and contributions informed the process. “My sincere appreciation goes to the African Union Commission, GIZ, and all stakeholders whose invaluable contributions made this achievement possible,” he stated.
