MMUST Researcher Prof. Maurice Vincent Omolo Showcases Innovative Jigger Treatment Gel at 2026 Mashujaa Day Thematic Week
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) researcher, Prof. Maurice Vincent Omolo, was among the researchers who exhibited their innovations at the 2026 Mashujaa Day Thematic Week at The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP). Themed ‘Security, Sports and the Economy,’ the event brought together researchers showcasing innovations supported by the National Research Fund (NRF) Kenya. The 2026 Mashujaa Day Thematic Week, held from 13th to 18th October, 2026, served as the lead-up to the national Mashujaa Day celebrations, which will be celebrated on October 20, 2026.
Among the innovations on display is a jigger treatment gel developed by Prof. Omolo to manage tungiasis, a parasitic skin condition caused by jigger flea infestations. The gel offers an alternative to harsh traditional treatments, with a formulation designed for safe application, including on sensitive areas of the body.

The Chairman of the National Research Fund (NRF) Kenya Board of Trustees, Dr. Thomas Kiprono Serem, visited Prof. Maurice Vincent Omolo’s exhibition stand, where he was taken through the functionality and application of the Funza Gel and Jigger Treatment Gel products.
Jigger infestations remain a public health challenge in some Kenyan communities, particularly among vulnerable populations. Beyond the physical discomfort, the condition can affect mobility, school attendance, productivity and overall quality of life. Innovations such as the jigger treatment gel demonstrate how research can contribute to practical solutions for pressing community health challenges.

Through this event, NRF highlighted the impact of investment in locally driven research and innovation. The initiative provided researchers with an opportunity to demonstrate how scientific knowledge can be translated into solutions that respond to Kenya’s development priorities.
Prof. Omolo’s participation underscored MMUST’s role in advancing research, supporting innovation and contributing to solutions that improve lives. It also reflects the importance of sustained investment in research that bridges the gap between scientific discovery and practical application.
