
MMUST Joins Kakamega County to Champion Environmental Sustainability on World Environment Day 2026
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) joined the County Government of Kakamega and various stakeholders in commemorating World Environment Day, 5th June 2026 at Kisaina Primary School, Isukha Central Ward.
The event themed “Inspired by nature for climate for our future” is accompanied by a call regarding climate problems and their solutions. It emphasized the importance of environmental conservation, tree growing, and collective action in addressing climate change challenges. In attendance from MMUST was Stundents from Greening Initiative and Presidential Award- Kenya (PA-K) who were supported by Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo. The students were accompanied by the Lead Patron (PA-K MMUST Chapter) Ms. Tabytha Shisia. This event was marked by a bycycle riding competition sponsored by the Kakamega County Governor, which was won by the MMUST Presidents Awards Kenya member.

The event was graced by H.E. Fernandes Barasa, the Governor Kakamega County. Speaking during the event, Governor Barasa called upon residents, institutions and stakeholders to embrace sustainable environmental practices, including tree growing, proper waste management and the protection of natural ecosystem. “Today, we are gathered here to celebrate World Environment Day under the theme ‘Inspired by Nature for a Climate-Resilient Future,’ reminding us that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility and a critical step towards addressing the climate crisis,” said Governor Barasa.
The Lead Patron of the President’s Award Kenya (PA-K) MMUST Chapter, Ms. Tabytha Shisia, also emphasized the critical role of young people in environmental conservation, noting that meaningful change begins with individual responsibility and collective action. “World Environment Day provides an opportunity for young people to take an active role in protecting the environment. Through tree planting, environmental awareness, and community service, we can inspire lasting change and build a sustainable future for generations to come,” she said.

Mr. Okomo Calvix Oyier, an Information Systems and Knowledge Management professional and the Disseminator of the Kenya Sign Language (KSL) MMUST Chapter as well as its core founder, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in environmental initiatives and student participation in conservation efforts.“As students, we should not only take part in environmental activities like tree planting, but also ensure inclusivity in communication and participation. Environmental conservation should be accessible to everyone, including the deaf community, so that no one is left behind in building a greener future,” he said.
Other stakeholders present at the event included Practical Action, Pedal for Kach, Kenya Forest Service (KFS), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Kenya Red Cross Society, Co-operative Bank of Kenya, and the Magharibi Climate Change Mitigation Project (MCCMP), among other partners who continue to play a key role in supporting environmental conservation and climate action initiatives in the region.
