MMUST Mentors Over 2,000 Senior School Learners on Career Choices and Higher Education Pathways as They Prepare for Post-Secondary Education!
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s Directorate of Career Services and the Marketing unit on 4th and 6th June, 2026, participated in career mentorship programmes at St. Stephen’s Lwanya Girls High School in Busia County and Nova Pioneer Boys School in Eldoret, respectively. The Busia mentorship programme attracted over 1,500 senior school learners drawn from various secondary schools across the County, while the Eldoret event brought together students from several schools who joined Nova Pioneer Boys School for the career mentorship. Collectively, the two engagements reached over 2000 learners, providing them with an opportunity to interact with higher education stakeholders, including MMUST, and receive guidance on academic and career pathways as they prepare for post-secondary education. The MMUST delegation was led by the Ag. Director of Career Services, Dr. Drinold Mbete.

“We had meaningful one-on-one interactions with the students. Many of them had limited knowledge about opportunities available in institutions of higher learning, making these engagements extremely valuable. Based on the number of learners who visited our exhibiting booth, we surpassed our expectations and were able to impact a significant number of students,” remarked Dr. Mbete during an interview with the Directorate of Corporate Communications and Marketing (DCCM).

Addressing the learners, the University’s Marketing Officer, Mr. James Mureithi noted that MMUST is committed to equipping students with the information they need to make informed academic and career choices. “We are here to assure you that whatever your passion, be it in science, technology, education, health sciences, business, or arts, MMUST offers a wide range of programmes across its eleven Schools. Coupled with a conducive learning environment, highly qualified faculty, and state-of-the-art facilities, our University will provide you with the ideal platform to realize your academic aspirations and build successful careers. We are ready to welcome you to the MMUST family and walk this journey with you,” he stated.
Additionally, Mr. Mureithi encouraged the learners to pursue courses that align with their interests, talents, and career goals rather than making decisions based on peer influence or institutional prestige alone.

Sensitizing learners on University placement process, Ms. Nevile Lukaya, a KUCCPS Officer based in Kakamega guided the students on the university and college applications, government funding opportunities, and the importance of making informed course selection.
“Some of the common mistakes students make during course selection include prioritizing universities over programmes, selecting courses at random, succumbing to peer pressure, failing to revise course choices when given the opportunity, and providing incorrect contact information during the application process,” she noted, and urged them to rank their preferred courses carefully and submit their applications within the stipulated timelines to improve their chances of securing placement in programmes aligned with their career aspirations.

The students were encouraged to understand the subject requirements for their preferred university programmes early enough and remain focused on their academic performance.
