
MMUST Successfully Hosts Inaugural Alumni Dinner to Mobilize Support for Needy Students
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) on 19th December 2025 successfully hosted its inaugural Alumni Dinner under the theme ‘Reconnect for Impact.’ The event marked a key milestone in strengthening alumni engagement while mobilizing resources to support needy and vulnerable students. The inaugural Alumni Dinner was coordinated by the Director of Career Services, Prof. Robert Egessa, in collaboration with a designated committee, whose efforts were lauded for the successful planning and execution of the event.
The dinner was graced by one of the University Council Members- Ms. Eunice Wakofula who was representing the Principal Secretary for Education, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala. The Vice Chancellor- Prof. Solomon Shibairo was also present at the event. It brought together alumni, members of staff, students, and partners in a shared commitment to support the University Endowment Fund, an initiative for long-term financial sustainability, primarily to support needy students facing fee challenges and to fund research. The Fund primarily focuses on assisting financially disadvantaged students to prevent dropouts, while also supporting research and innovation through donations.

The dinner brought together alumni, members of staff, students, and partners in a shared commitment to strengthen the University Endowment Fund, which is designed to secure long-term financial sustainability for MMUST. The Fund primarily focuses on supporting financially disadvantaged students to prevent dropouts, while also promoting research and innovation through donations.

During the event, participants raised Ksh. 175,600, demonstrating strong alumni goodwill and commitment to giving back to the University. Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor- Prof. Solomon Shibairo provided a detailed background of the University Endowment Fund, noting that it was established in 2021 by the University Council as a key strategy for resource mobilization and financial sustainability. The Vice-Chancellor explained that the ultimate goal of the Fund is to invest contributions and use the surplus generated to support needy and vulnerable students.
“The Fund received its initial donations of Ksh. 200,000 from MMUST former Chancellor, Dr. Peter Muthoka, and Ksh. 500,000 from Family Bank. The Fund has since recorded significant growth and currently stands at Ksh. 21,798,122.07, following a major boost of Ksh. 20 million from the University Council in August 2024,” stated Prof. Shibairo.
He added that the Endowment Policy has already been approved and that the University is in the process of developing a procedures manual to guide the identification of beneficiaries and the transparent distribution of funds to needy students.

The inaugural Alumni Dinner demonstrated that, a shared commitment that can create a lasting impact. It signaled the start of a renewed culture of working between the University Management and the alumni, one that places student success and the University’s future at its core.
