MMUST Records Significant Improvement in Productivity Index During the 2025/2026 Financial Year
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has recorded a significant improvement in its overall organizational efficiency, operational outputs, and performance Contracting scores during the 2025/2026 Financial Year. The achievement was unveiled during a Productivity Mainstreaming Workshop facilitated by officers from the National Productivity and Competitiveness Centre (NPCC). The workshop which took place from 3rd to 6th August, 2026 at Golf Hotel, brought together University managers and heads of cost centers to strengthen their understanding of productivity enhancement strategies that will reinforce a culture of continuous improvement across all functional areas. The milestone follows deliberate institutional reforms designed to cascade productivity mainstreaming, prudent fiscal management, and strategic performance metrics down to individual departmental cost centers.

While presenting the University’s Productivity Index, the NPCC facilitators announced that MMUST had improved its score from 1.824 to 2.660, marking a positive deviation of 0.836 in the University’s productivity journey. The impressive increase underscores the effectiveness of the University’s strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, service delivery, innovation, and overall institutional performance. The workshop was organized by the Directorate of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation led by Prof. Joseph Nasongo and coordinated by Dr. Rapando Wakhu (Coordinator, Productivity Mainstreaming).

Speaking during the workshop, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, applauded the improvement in the University’s Productivity Index, describing it as a dedication and collective efforts of the entire University community. “This achievement reflects our commitment to excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement. It demonstrates that the strategies we have put in place are yielding positive results. I commend every member of staff for their dedication and hard work, and encourage us to sustain this momentum as we strive to uphold MMUST as a globally competitive university renowned for quality teaching, impactful research, innovation, and exceptional service delivery. Productivity is a shared responsibility, and together we can achieve even greater milestones,” said Prof. Shibairo.

The workshop was also attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Research and Innovation), Prof. Christopher Ngacho, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Hussein Golicha. Prof. Ngacho noted that the impressive improvement in the Productivity Index reflects the success of the University’s strategic planning, performance management, and quality enhancement initiatives. He emphasized that productivity should remain a central pillar in decision-making, innovation, and resource utilization to ensure the University continues to achieve sustainable growth and deliver value to its stakeholders.

Similarly, Prof. Golicha pointed out that productivity is fundamental to academic excellence and quality service delivery. He encouraged members of staff to embrace a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration to enable the University to attain even higher levels of institutional performance and competitiveness.
The facilitators Ms. Jane Maina (Director NPCC) and Mr. John Chege (ICT Statistician NPCC), commended the University for its commitment to embracing productivity mainstreaming and implementing measures that have contributed to the notable improvement. They encouraged the University managers to maintain the momentum by continuously monitoring performance, strengthening quality management systems, and cultivating a culture of accountability and innovation.

The Productivity Mainstreaming Workshop forms part of MMUST’s broader agenda to strengthen institutional performance and align its operations with national development priorities. The significant rise in the Productivity Index indicates the MMUST’s steady progress towards achieving operational excellence.
