About this Project

Inclusive and Innovative Digital Education for Migrant Community in Kenya and Somalia (IIDEMIC) seeks to strengthen soft skill competencies among Somali refugees in Kenya and Somalia envisioning that it will improve their entrepreneurial innovation and ability to embrace technology. This will be critical in building future skills and competencies among Somali refugees and other refugees in Kenya and Somalia. This project will seek to introduce soft skill competency modules in Kenya Universities; enhance interaction with inclusive and innovative digital tools and promote teacher practice in classrooms to reflect integration of 21st century soft skills. The mission is to empower refugees, host communities and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) through tertiary education, research and partnerships in refugee camps in Kakuma and Dadaab. IIDEMIC will focus on inclusive education for migrants leveraging on digital space.The project  therefore, will create a lifelong learning platform  that is accessible to the  refugee and migrant population. An accessible data centre with adaptive features to cater for all kinds of disabilities will be developed.

The objectives of the project are to:

Project Objectives

  1. Lifelong Learning Platform: Develop a platform accessible to refugee and migrant populations to build capacities and enhance employability in Kenya and Somalia.
  2. Accessible Data Centre: Create a data center with adaptive features for individuals with disabilities to access essential information.
  3. Inclusive Education Programme: Develop a program to improve teachers’ skills in inclusive pedagogy.
  4. Soft Skill Development: Strengthen soft skills among Somali refugees and IDPs to boost entrepreneurial innovation and technology adoption.
  5. Critical Skills Promotion: Promote critical skills for self-reliance among Somali refugees and other migrant populations.
  6. Assistive Technologies: Enhance teacher practice and use of assistive technologies in classrooms, integrating 21st-century soft skills.
  7. Tertiary Education Empowerment: Empower refugees, host communities, and IDPs through tertiary education and partnerships in Kenyan refugee camps (Dadaab and Kakuma).
  8. ICT in Education: Utilize ICT to improve access, quality, and management of education for Somali migrants.
  9. Development of Online Content: Develop and adapt online content considering African and local contexts.
  10. Equipment and Facilities: Provide necessary equipment and services, including connectivity and power.
  11. Mobile and Online Platforms: Create mobile and online education platforms accessible to all students, regardless of their circumstances.

Amount: consortium -  719,939 Euros (KES 112,839,000.00). The MMUST team has been awarded 84,999 Euros equivalent to thirteen million three hundred and twenty four thousand (KES 13,324,000.00.).

Research Milestones

  1. Kick off Meeting: The official launch of the research project was held at Dumlupinar Kutahya University, Turkey, from February 12th to 17th, 2024.
  2. Workshop on Online Module Writing: Conducted at WSB University Poznan, Poland, from July 1st to 6th, 2024.
