MASINDE MULIRO UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STAFF LIKELY TO ACCESS AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The meeting was graced by Ms. Rose Anene who represented the Chairman, Prof. Edwin Wamukoya. Ms. Anene encouraged staff to fill registration forms to enable their enrollment into the project.

The Marketing Director, Pinnie Agency Limited, Mr. John Brown explained to the participants where the houses will be located, including Mudiri, Lubao, Otiende, Old Airport, and Mumias. He emphasized that the suites ranging from studio to exclusive 5 bedroom apartments are located next to major amenities and main services including water, electricity and sewer lines. Mr. Brown acknowledged that the project was financed by Wake Up International taking a share of 65% and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) 35% respectively. He presented copies of legal documents which are ready for the project.

“The sites which are located with easy access to Kakamega- Kisumu highway and Kakamega- Webuye road also have easy connection to major amenities of Kakamega town, making it easy for the residents to carry out their activities,” he stated.

The Architect from Pinnie Agency Limited, Prof. John Kanyangweso talked about the social amenities that will be available as a result of the housing project which include shopping mall, ECDE centre, dispensary, and common facilities. These will be of great benefit to the residents as they will not only ensure security of the residents but also about their health. He added that the project includes Green areas landscaped to provide a classy environment with units that have large windows opened to the landscaped area. Further, he affirmed that security of the residents will be ensured by building a masonry wall around the compound with electric fencing above it.

“We shall incorporate Circuit Television System (CCTV) to monitor movements in the common areas. A reputable Security Firm will man the two vehicular and pedestrian entrances. We shall also ensure the residents’ wellbeing by putting in place sheds, benches, pavilions and meditation areas designated within the open area for outdoor seating and children's playground. For convenience, car parking space of up to one and half per unit for residents and visitors, and a small shopping mall. Finally, for recreational purposes we shall construct a swimming pool and a gymnasium. Without forgetting the residents’ health, an aerobic sewer treatment plant to be installed with waste water used for landscaping. Water availability will be ensured by a common borehole and underground reservoir tank. Rooftops will have laundry areas and rooftop gardens,” said the architect.

The Affordable Housing project is targeted to benefit the county government of Kakamega staff, civil servants residing in the region and MMUST staff. Interested individuals are required to deposit 20% of the fee to show their commitment. Official ground breaking of the project will be held on 15th March, 2022 and the deadline of submission of the filled documents is on 4th March, 2022.

The partners of the project are Pinnie Agency Limited, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), LLOYD Capital, Wake Up International, Green Jewel, and Kakamega County Investment Development Agency (KCIDA).

In attendance were the consortium chairman Mr. Shem Tai, Eng. Renson Deche, Research expert Mr. Benard Nyikuli, NEMA lead expert Mr. Clarence Machoka, landscape architect Mr. Walter Ochieng, and Mr. Suleiman Magare.
