Disaster Environment Management Association (DEMA), a group of students from MMUST’s School of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (SDMHA), on Saturday, 24th February, 2024, engaged with street children in Kakamega County, courtesy of an initiative dubbed ‘Bread to the Streets’. The event, which took place at Muliro Gardens, saw about 30 members of DEMA share food with the children, as well as participate in other team-bonding activities including games, music and dance.

According to the Association’s Director, Mr. David Omurai, the club is seeking to reduce the number of street children in Kakamega County by conducting such activities. He added that the group is determined to see the street children go back to school as well as to ensure successful family reintegration for them. Mr. Omurai further thanked the Dean-SDMHA, Dr. Ferdinand Nabiswa, for his support, which made the event possible.

It is worth noting that DEMA, whose patroness is Dr. Veronica Kiluva, engages in green initiatives, mentorship programmes, and disaster management and humanitarian assistance. Other club officials present during the event were; Malik Chemuche (Operation Director), Abubakari Mrabu (Treasurer), Joan Ngoye (Deputy Operation Director), Juliet Jepkoech (Public Relations Officer), Cate Marion (First-year Representative) and Simion Akama (Welfare Director).

DEMA has taken part in various outreach activities and is without doubt living up to its Motto of ‘Service to Humanity’. The Association’s commitment to the noble cause of reducing the number of street children in Kakamega County is indeed admirable and we wish the group all the best in its future endeavours!
