Two (2) students pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality and Institution Management at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology have experienced the global tourism industry, courtesy of the Erasmus+ program. Brian Nyatogo Nyaucho and Evangeline Kemboi Jerotich visited Croatia for six months, where they studied at the University of Rijeka- Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, while doing an internship at the Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa.
During their study at the University of Rijeka, the two (2) students interacted with a diverse group of international students, giving them an opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from their peers. Brian and Evangeline went through various programs, including Sustainable Tourism, Destination Management, as well as Marketing Strategies for Tourism Enterprises. “These courses broadened our understanding of tourism beyond Kenya’s context. We learnt about managing large-scale tourism operations in the highly competitive European market, while focusing on sustainability, a concept that has reshaped businesses worldwide,” says Brian. He adds that the academic experience helped them to develop a global perspective on tourism and how it can be used to promote economic growth, at the same time preserving cultural and environmental heritage.

Their internship at the Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa, located in Opatija town, saw them gain firsthand knowledge in front-office operations, guest relations, marketing and event planning. As they obtained insights into how a global hotel chain operates, they were taught the importance of attention to detail, customer service excellence, and the ability to adapt to the needs of international guests. “I found my passion in event management, working closely with the Resort’s team to coordinate weddings and corporate retreats. On the other hand, Brian was drawn to hotel operations and guest services, learning how to ensure a seamless and memorable experience for guests,” remarks Evangeline. Notably, the Hilton Costabella is a world-class Resort and renowned seaside destination, known for its luxury services and high-end clientele.
The Director of International Relations and Academic Linkages (DIAL) at MMUST, Dr. Umulkher Ali, has congratulated the two (2) for flying the University flag on the global map. She points out that her Directorate is keen to support exchange programs, and encourages staff and students to take advantage of the partnerships that MMUST has established to secure international opportunities.

Without doubt, Brian and Evangeline’s 6-month adventure in a top tourist destination in Europe exposed them to the global tourism industry. They not only broadened their knowledge in tourism studies, but they also provided a unique perspective from Kenya, which has a rich tourism culture of its own. This international exposure will certainly enhance their career prospects in the Kenya tourism industry and beyond.
