In a remarkable show of commitment to environmental conservation, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) partnered with the Rotaract Club in a tree-planting initiative aimed at enhancing the university’s green cover. The event, held at MMUST's main campus on 17th October 2024, saw the donation of 100 tree seedlings to support the national greening agenda.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Umulkher Ali who was representing the DVC Planning, Research and Innovation (PR&I) pointed out the significance of environmental conservation, highlighting the university's commitment to creating a sustainable environment for future generations.
“This tree-planting initiative is a vital step towards making our campus greener and more sustainable. This is an essential activity for fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and we intend to expand it further in the University,” she noted.
The Registrar (Planning, Research, and Innovation), Dr. Collins Matemba, reinforced the shared responsibility of preserving the environment, stressing the need for collective action among students and staff to ensure the longevity of these efforts.
“Greening the campus is not just about aesthetics; it’s about protecting our ecosystem for future generations,” he remarked.

The Chairperson of the Department of Disaster Management and Sustainable Development - Dr Edward Mugalavai, outlined plans for expanding the tree-planting drive significantly in the coming months to reach more students and community members.

“This initiative aligns with our broader goal of making MMUST a model for environmental sustainability. It is just the beginning of a larger commitment to environmental excellence at MMUST,” he emphasized.
Similarly, the Patron of the MMUST Rotary Club, Dr. Eunice Rapando, lauded the collaboration between MMUST and the Rotaract Club and expressed hope that this initiative would inspire other organizations to take similar actions for the betterment of the community.
This event underscores MMUST's commitment to the national tree-planting campaign and promoting environmental sustainability. Additionally, it sets the stage for a project scheduled for October 26, 2024, which aims to instill in students the value of selflessness, aligning with Rotary's core values.
