Dr. Humphrey Agevi Receives Another Global Recognition as an IPCC Expert

Dr. Humphrey Agevi, a leading Environmental Scientist from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), has again been recognized globally through his nomination as an Expert by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This global recognition which comes barely two months after he was nominated as a reviewer to the UNEP GEO-7 report, marks another milestone in his illustrious career.  IPCC is a global body of the United Nations that handles climate change issues. This recognition solidifies his outstanding contribution to the international environmental community and highlights his continuous commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

As a new IPCC expert, Dr. Agevi will contribute to the development of the Seventh Edition of the Assessment Report (AR7) by working under Working Group III, on climate mitigation, assessing methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The scoping meeting for developing the report outline is scheduled for December 2024 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

To his career development, the nomination positions Dr. Agevi to contribute directly to shaping international climate policies and solutions, enhancing his impact on global sustainability. In addition, Dr. Agevi will gain deeper insights into cutting-edge research, methodologies, and best practices in mitigation, enriching his ability to effectively integrate into the environmental and climate-related courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Further, collaborating with renowned experts in the IPCC will expand his professional network, fostering opportunities for future research and leadership roles. Similarly, Dr. Agevi’s work with other authors on the On-farm tree abundance and biomass carbon stocks of Grevillea robusta and Eucalyptus Saligna on farms around Kakamega Forest has contributed to the development of the sixth National Report that Kenya submitted to the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD).

The nomination is significant to the institution having a faculty member who is also an alumnus contributing to the IPCC, a globally respected scientific body. This elevates the University’s reputation as a hub for climate-related research and a leader in addressing regional climate challenges, especially in Kenya and Africa. This position could attract partnerships, grants, and collaborations with international institutions focused on climate change and mitigation strategies.
