
MMUST Conducts Matriculation Ceremony for Its First Years, as More Than 6000 Students Are Initiated Into Higher Education
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has conducted a matriculation ceremony for its first-year students in a solemn event that saw more than 6000 students take an academic oath to become responsible members of the University community. This oath, which was administered by the institution’s Senior Legal Officer, Grace Mburu, binds the freshmen and women to adhere to the University’s rules and regulations while undertaking their studies. The event was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo and attended by the Chair Academic Committee MMUST Council, Dr. Kennedy Olung’o, who was representing the Chairperson of Council, Dr. Pamela Sitienei.

“As Council, we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting quality higher education. We recognize that delivering academic excellence goes beyond the lecture hall and have therefore endeavored to continuously invest in infrastructure, modern equipment, state-of-the-art laboratories, and other essential facilities – all geared towards creating an engaging and enriching learning environment,” stated Dr. Olung’o in his remarks.

Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, Prof. Shibairo highlighted the institution’s flagship programmes and congratulated the students for having been selected to join a University of this calibre. “Our wide range of programs reflect our belief in interdisciplinary learning, a blend of science, technology, arts, and social sciences to prepare well-rounded graduates for a complex world. I urge you to remember that university life is more than lectures and examinations. It is a time in life when one has the youthful energy to learn, socialize, discover, and innovate,” he said.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Hussein Golicha emphasized on MMUST’s core values, saying that they ought to be the guiding principles for students who wish to excel in higher education. The Ag. DVC for Planning, Research and Innovation Prof. Peter Bukhala and Prof. Maurice Vincent Omolo (Representing the DVC for Administration and Finance, Prof. John Kuria Thuo) were also in attendance.

Reflecting on the entire orientation process for first year students at MMUST, the Registrar Academic affairs, Prof. Judah Ndiku concurred that the students had received induction and guidance regarding their stay at the University. “For an entire week, first year students have been taken through the requirements and behavioral protocols that are part of the expectations of studying at the University level. You have been addressed by different people on a variety of topics. This ceremony cements the fact that you are ready to adhere to what you have been taught,” he remarked.
Notably, the matriculation ceremony attracted the attendance of the University Management Board, Senate, Deans and Directors, Academic staff, non teaching staff , student leaders, and continuing students. Such ceremonies underscore the solemn role of universities not only in academics but also in community transformation. Indeed, MMUST is staying true to academic culture and practice-this is the way to go.
