MMUST Inducts School Practice Advisors to Enhance CBE Implementation Through Effective Learner Supervision
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has conducted a school practice induction Workshop for advisors in the School of Education (SEDU), as well as those from other supporting departments. The Workshop, which took place on Monday, 11th May, 2026, was organized in preparation for supervision of over 2000 students, who are currently on School Practice. It was coordinated by the School Practice Unit in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology (CIT), under SEDU. The exercise aimed at strengthening CBE implementation through effective learner supervision.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Hussein Golicha, stated that the University is committed to facilitating lecturers to undertake School practice in various learning institutions across the country. “We take cognizance of the fact that this cohort of teacher trainees is going to handle students in Junior Secondary Schools, who are currently undertaking the Competency-Based Curriculum. Therefore, it is important for us to shift our focus on how we conduct teaching and training to be more student-centered, ensuring that our students are able to teach CBC learners,” stated Prof. Golicha.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Hussein Golicha, and the Dean-School of Education, Prof. Moses Poipoi, look on as Dr. Fredrick Matofari explains a point.
While giving his keynote address, the Chief Principal of Kakamega High School-Dr. Elphas Aliva Luvaso, emphasized that CBE is learner-centered and that the curriculum promotes the acquisition of practical skills, values and attitudes among learners. “Successful implementation of CBE greatly depends on effective learner supervision and proper guidance by advisors and teachers during school practice. Learner supervision plays a key role in ensuring active participation and meaningful competency acquisition among learners,” said Dr. Luvaso.
“The responsibility of assessing our student teachers during their school practice is part of the teacher training curriculum. It is the cornerstone of teacher preparation and service to our nation. We are doing this during the implementation of CBC, which has had certain challenges, including inconsistencies in assessment, limited resources, as well as time and logistical constraints,” pointed out the Dean-SEDU, Prof. Moses Poipoi. He added that his School has proposed strategic interventions aimed at improving the effectiveness of learner supervision and curriculum delivery.
