MMUST Showcases Medical Expertise as Ogango Residents in Kisumu East Experience an Array of Free Health Services
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has once again proved its expertise and dedication to community service through a successful free medical camp to the residents of Ogango Village in Kisumu East on 10th May 2025. The outreach brought together various departments from the university, including the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, the Directorate of Corporate Communications and Marketing (DCCM), the Directorate of AIDS Control, Gender and Disability Mainstreaming, as well as the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical Sciences. The outreach was steered by the Outreach Coordinator- Dr. Issah Kweyu, in collaboration with the Finance Officer- CPA Jared Rading’, who played a key role in the mobilization of participants for the successful execution of the initiative.
The initiative attracted hundreds of residents seeking various health interventions. Over six hundred patients were screened during the outreach, 207 readers (spectacles) dispensed, and eye drops provided to those who required them. The exercise also included vital health checks such as blood pressure examination, blood sugar testing, and HIV screening. The outreach provided a valuable platform for health education, allowing the medical team to effectively sensitize patients on the link between eye health and chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. Through this holistic approach, the exercise not only addressed immediate health needs but also raised awareness about the broader impact of lifestyle diseases on vision and overall well-being. DCCM utilized the opportunity availed by the outreach to market the University academic programs.

In an interview with the DCCM crew, Mr. Peter Nandikove from the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical Sciences pointed out that the purpose of the medical camp was to address the entire wellness of vitals among Ogango residents who were the target of the outreach. “This is very good exposure for hands-on training both for our students. Our experience with patients here during the breast cancer screening has revealed that there is a need to educate both men and women on how to conduct self- examination. Men too can have breast cancer,” stated Mr. Nandikove.

I have had problems with my eyesight for over five years, but I could not afford to see a doctor. Today, MMUST examined my eyes, provided medication, and gave me spectacles. I am truly grateful,” said Mr. Wafula.
As MMUST continues to expand its academic footprint, its efforts in community engagement and public health promotion is proof that Universities can be powerful agents of change in communities.
