
MMUST Hosts HELB Team To Support Students With Scholarships And Loans Applications
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has been hosting officers from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) from 8th and 10th September, 2025. The team has been at MMUST to assist students with scholarship and loan applications, while also addressing queries on financial aid opportunities. The officers from HELB included Ms. Lydia Ogara, Ms. Monica Muhoho, and Ms. Caroline Mueni, who commended MMUST for offering a supportive platform for them to engage directly with students and staff.

During their visit, the HELB officers held a meeting with the Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning, Research and Innovation (DVC PRI)- Prof. Peter Bukhala who urged them to explore a research agenda jointly with MMUST to help improve their services to students across the country. He emphasized the need for evidence-based strategies in higher education financing, noting that such efforts would ensure greater access and equity in learning opportunities.
“The future of higher education financing depends on continuous improvement and innovation. A research-driven approach will allow HELB to better understand the challenges facing students and design solutions that directly address the needs of the students,” stated Prof. Peter Bukhala.

The other members of staff present during the meeting included the Deputy Finance Officer-CPA Elkana Kinyor who applauded HELB for its continued efforts in supporting students through loan disbursements. He was also accompanied by Mr. Dennis Mumo, Mr. Christopher Wafula Noah from the Admissions office and Ms. Linda Omenya from the office of the Dean of Students.

One of the HELB officers, Ms. Lydia Ogara highlighted postgraduate funding opportunities available to university staff which includes the Jielimishe Loan of up to Ksh 600,000, PhD loans of up to Ksh 450,000, Master’s loans of up to Ksh 200,000, and a special partnership loan of up to Ksh 500,000 for nursing students. These facilities are designed to support staff in advancing their studies while balancing professional and personal commitments.
The HELB officers acknowledged that during their three-day stay at the University, they had successfully assisted over 500 students in navigating scholarship and loan application processes.
