McDonald Mariga Inspires University Students with Motivational Talk on Resilience and Success

In an engaging and inspiring session, renowned Kenyan footballer McDonald Mariga shared his journey and experiences with Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology students. Mariga visited the University on 24th September 2024 where he mentored students on commercializing their talents. The event was graced by the Chairperson of Council, Dr. Pamela Sitienei alongside members of the Council.  

The mentorship session was also attended by the Vice Chancellor- Prof. Solomon Shibairo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs)- Prof. Hussein Golicha, the Registrar (Academic Affairs)- Prof. Judah Ndiku, Dean of Students- Dr. Bernadette Abwao, Director of Career Services- Prof. Robert Egessa and MMUSO leaders.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Sitienei pointed out that as a University we are keen to nurture talents. She encouraged the students to identify their niche, build a portfolio, and honor humble beginnings as they venture into co-curricular activities. “Your talents can be your greatest asset if you learn how to market them effectively,” advised Dr. Sitienei.

Commenting on the mentorship, Prof. Shibairo noted that through the talent scholarship program, MMUST has committed itself to supporting the students in building their talents. He challenged sports enthusiasts to embrace education as they do sports.

The event drew a large crowd of students eager to hear from the veteran multitalented Mariga, who shared insights from his remarkable journey from a small town in Kenya to the international football stage. Reflecting on his experiences, Mariga spoke candidly about his challenges, including injuries and financial struggles, and how these obstacles shaped his career. He emphasized the importance of perseverance, resilience, and balancing academics and sports, drawing from his own experiences of facing setbacks during his career.

“Success is not just about talent; it is about determination and the will to keep pushing forward despite the obstacles,” said Mariga. He recounted stories from his journey, including the struggles he faced while trying to make a name for himself in the competitive world of sports. Mariga’s message resonated deeply, as many students could relate to the pressures and uncertainties that come with university life.

In addition to sharing his narrative, Mariga highlighted the importance of social responsibility. He encouraged students to use their education and skills to give back to their communities, emphasizing that true success is measured by the positive impact one has on others.

The address concluded with a vibrant Q&A session, where students posed questions about career paths, overcoming adversity, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Mariga’s approachable demeanor and thoughtful responses resonated with the students, leaving many feeling motivated and empowered.
