On 19th December, 2024, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) joined the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) Kenya Chapter at Shikusa Borstal and Boys’ Education Centre to mark the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The event, themed ‘No Excuse, Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls,’ brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including judges, magistrates, representatives from the County Government of Kakamega, the Law Society of Kenya (Kakamega Chapter), the National Police Service, and the school’s community. Graced by Lady Justice Teresa Odera, the event underscored the importance of collective efforts in combating GBV. MMUST was represented by the Director of International Relations and Academic Linkages, Dr. Umulkher Ali, and the Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing, Dr. Lydia Anyonje, who affirmed the University’s commitment to this critical cause.
In her address, Lady Justice Teresa Odera, emphasized the often-overlooked challenges of the boy child. She commended the students for their discipline and the impressive skills demonstrated through various initiatives, including agricultural projects, sports, and vocational project outputs such as masonry, plumbing, electrical wiring, welding, carpentry, painting, tailoring, and polishing. “There is life ahead. You are here to be trained to become responsible members of society, and I encourage you to learn as much as possible while in this program,” she remarked.

Dr. Umulkher Ali expressed gratitude for the strong and ongoing partnership between Shikusa Borstal Institution and MMUST, emphasizing the University’s commitment to fostering and strengthening their collaboration. She highlighted the significance of inspiring the students to dream beyond their current circumstances and aspire to pursue higher education, proposing future initiatives that would allow the boys to visit MMUST and experience University life firsthand.
“My colleagues and I are eager to interact with you, and I hope there will be more opportunities for you to visit MMUST. We are delighted to continue building this relationship and to create more avenues to support your growth and development,” she stated.

Echoing her sentiments, Lady Justice Alice Bet urged the students to make the most of the available training facilities and opportunities, highlighting the importance of building both their skills and character. “Your current circumstances do not define your future. Embrace the teachings and guidance provided, as your lives are in your hands. With dedication and hard work, you can create successful and fulfilling futures,” she said.
Dr. Lydia Anyonje shared her joy in being part of this year’s celebrations, expressing appreciation to all stakeholders for their contributions to the boys’ lives. She encouraged the students to pursue their studies diligently and consider MMUST as their destination for higher education. “Education is a powerful tool to transform your lives, and we are here to support you on that journey,” said Dr. Anyonje.

The Principal and Superintendent Incharge of Shikusa Borstal Education Centre, Mr. George Odera, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to nurturing boys into responsible citizens who stand for peace, respect, and justice. He expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders for their support in transforming the lives of the boys.
“As we mark the conclusion of the 16 days of activism against GBV against girls and women, let us leave here united in the fight against GBV. Together, we can ensure that our girls and women live in safety and dignity. Let us also remember that boys and men are crucial allies in this endeavor,” he said.

Shikusa Borstal Institution and Boys Education Centre is a juvenile correctional facility dedicated to providing a second chance for boys in conflict with the law, offering them an opportunity to rebuild their lives. The institution runs comprehensive rehabilitation programs, including life skills training, drug addiction recovery, responsible sexual health education, GBV sensitization, and empowerment for boys who have survived GBV.
The school also offers a wide range of vocational training programs aligned with Grade 3 NITA certification trades, such as masonry, plumbing, electrical wiring, welding, carpentry, upholstery, painting, tailoring, and polishing. Additional programs include beadwork, agriculture, animal husbandry, games and sports, music and positive entertainment, the Presidential Award Scheme, study tours, internships, and research projects. These initiatives aim to create a nurturing environment that fosters learning and rehabilitation, guided by the institution’s commitment to upholding children’s rights and providing boys with care and opportunities for growth like any other child.

Notable personalities at the event included the Senior Resident Magistrates from the Kakamega Law Courts, Hon. Vienna Amboko and Hon. Dorcus Macandere; Speaker of the County Assembly- Hon. James Namati; Deputy Speaker- Hon. Bernard Shityabai; Chairperson of the Aftercare Committee- Dr. Odongo; County Director of Probation- Mercy Rugutt; representatives from the National Police Service, and Shikusa Sub-County Administrator Wilson Nyaola.
During the event, stakeholders donated various essential items to support the students, including a television, scientific calculators, counter books, toilet paper, shaving kits, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, innerwear, vests, and cartons of milk.

This event underscored the significance of collective action in combating GBV while highlighting the transformative role of education and skill development in rehabilitating and empowering young people. With the combined efforts of institutions like MMUST and key stakeholders such as the IAWJ and the government, the future of the students at Shikusa Borstal Institution and Boys’ Education Centre remains bright and full of promise.
