MMUST TAKES OVER OWNERSHIP OF STEM EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND DIGITAL LIBRARY FROM DIVERSITY EDUCATION INSTITUTE AFRICA

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is now the official administrator and owner of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education International Conference (STEMEIC), as well as a digital library with over sixty (60) thousand eBooks. Yesterday, 14^th June, 2022, Diversity Education Institute Africa (DEI-Africa) handed over the management of STEMEIC and the library to MMUST, in a semi-virtual ceremony that was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo and the DEI-Africa Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Alphonse Furuma.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Shibairo expressed gratitude to DEI-Africa for entrusting MMUST with the management of both the Conference and the digital library. “As a University, we are honored to have the opportunity of running the STEMEI Conference and the digital library. I want to assure you that the two (2) are in safe hands. The University Management has been supporting DEI and MMUST projects and will continue to support future collaborations,” stated Prof. Shibairo.

MMUST AFRICAN WOMEN IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (AWSE) DONATE SANITARY PADS TO STUDENTS AT ST. JOSEPH GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL, KAKAMEGA

Today 14^th June 2022, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology African Women in Science and Engineering (AWSE), put smiles on girls’ faces when they donated sanitary towels to students at St. Joseph’s Girls’ High School, Kakamega. The drive was led by the Chairperson AWSE, Western Chapter and MMUST lecturer Dr. Seline Ooko, Secretary AWSE, Ms. Judith Dipondo and Purity Muchere- Member AWSE.

This drive is the product of a Research funded by the University Research Fund (URF) that was conducted at St. Joseph’s Girls High School where the scholars noticed that many girls come from humble backgrounds and could not afford sanitary towels.

MMUST’S VISIT TO SACRED HEART MUKUMU GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL SET TO EMPOWER STUDENTS FOR LIFELONG CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) visit to the Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School, in Kakamega County, is set to empower students for lifelong career development. This was evident during the annual Career Fair day held on 11^th June, 2022 at the school. MMUST’s team led by Ms. Marcella Nandi who was representing the Director Career Services, Dr. Teresa Okoth, proved that it is one of the top best Universities nationwide.

During the event, Ms. Marcella Nandi highlighted programmes offered by the University and their strength in the competitive job market. She acknowledged that all the courses have been accredited and emphasized medicine as the most competitive course in the job industry. She also demonstrated to the students how to calculate the cluster points to various courses.

MMUST HOSTS MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND UNIVERSITIES FUND DELEGATES FOR MONITORING AND EVALUATION EXERCISE

A delegation from the Ministry of Education, State Department for University Education and Research, and Universities Fund (UF) (UF) today, 10^th June, 2022, visited Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology on a monitoring and evaluation exercise. The group was received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Students Affairs), Prof. Hussein Golicha, who was standing in for the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo.

The initiative, which began on 29^th May, 2022, is a joint effort between UF, State Department for University Education and Research, as well as the National Treasury (Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate). It seeks to collect data regarding the status of programmes and projects in all public Universities and Colleges in Kenya. Four (4) teams, which are distributed across the different regions of the country, have been tasked to carry out this project.

MMUST’S PARTERNSHIP WITH NORWEGIAN AGENCY FOR EXCHANGE COOPERATION (NOREC) SET TO STRENGTHEN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF OPTOMETRY AND VISION SCIENCES IN KENYA.

MMUST’s partnership with Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (NOREC) is set to strengthen the teaching and learning of Optometry and Vision Sciences in Kenya. This was evident during the workshop held yesterday, 9^th June, 2022 at the Main Catering Unit (MCU) Boardroom which was organized by Chairperson of the Department (CoD) Optometry, Dr. Christine Wanjala.

Speaking during the event, the Director Quality Assurance, Prof. Danstone Baraza who was also representing the DVC Academic and Student Affairs (ASA), Prof. Hussein Golicha, acknowledged that partnership with NOREC is of great impact on staff, students and the community. He outlined the objectives of the partnership, adding that it would improve clinical teaching, strengthen professional disposition development among students and enable recognition of MMUST as a trendsetter in optometry education in Africa and other parts of the globe. In addition, he pointed out that the collaboration would improve faculty competence in clinical teaching and e- learning. The partnership has also helped in acquisition of scholarships by participants.

MMUST LED DISABILITY AWARENESS TRAINING AT iHELP CENTRES CHAMPIONS FOR INCLUSIVITY IN UPBRINGING OF CHILDREN LIVING WITH DISABILITIES

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is championing inclusivity in upbringing of children living with disabilities through disability awareness training at iHELP centres in Kakamega County.  On 7^th June, 2022, the iHELP project Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Rose Opiyo, who is also a Senior Lecturer at MMUST, conducted a disability awareness training at Cardinal Centre in Idakho Central. The training was aimed at sensitizing the community, caregivers and mothers on the importance of inclusivity in raising Children Living with Disabilities.

MMUST DIRECTORATE OF POSTGRADUATE STUDIES REVIEWS ITS POLICIES IN TANDEM WITH CUE REQUIREMENTS AND GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE

The Directorate of Postgraduate Studies (DPS) at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has reviewed its policies in tandem with Commission for University Education (CUE) requirements and global best practice. The Directorate held a two-day workshop themed ‘Re-defining the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies’ at Golf hotel Kakamega from Monday 6^th to Tuesday 7^th June, 2022.

NSSF STEPS UP SENSITIZATION INITIATIVE TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF ITS PRODUCTS AT MMUST

We are delighted to inform you that today 10^th June 2022, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) team led by the Branch Manager, Ms. Vicky Owaki Webuye and Regional Accountant Dr. Alube Stanley of Kisumu branch visited MMUST.

The visit was aimed at sensitizing MMUST staff on NSSF products, savings, to keep track of staff contributions and inform them of the Voluntary top up which is in accordance with the NSSF Act of 2013 no. 45. The NSSF team paid a courtesy call to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Planning Research and Innovation, Prof. Charles Mutai (represented by the Director Science Park Innovation and Incubation Centre (SPIIC), Prof. John Muoma).
