Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) recently hosted a significant literary event marked by the launch of 'Awakening Junub: Switching on the Offed Lights,' a poetry book authored by Zachariah Kuir Mapor, a second-year international student studying Social Work. The book, which addresses pressing issues such as tribalism, corruption, and social injustices in South Sudan, was unveiled on 7th October 2024, coinciding with the country’s Independence Day. The launch took place at the MMUST Directorate of International Affairs and Linkages office led by the Director, Dr.Umulkher Ali.
Speaking at the event, Dr.Umulkher emphasized the importance of artistic expression in highlighting societal issues, applauding Mr. Kuir's poignant work.

“As a University, MMUST values initiatives that empower students to engage with critical social matters through creative outlets,” she noted.
Similarly, the Director of Research and Postgraduate Support, Prof. Francis Orata commended Mr. Kuir for his innovative approach to addressing complex themes and encouraged students to use their voices for positive change.
“The art of writing is a powerful tool for driving positive change in our communities and I want to commend Mr. Kuir's innovative approach to tackling complex themes," said Prof Orata.

Moreover, Mr. Kuir shared his motivations for writing the book and the importance of addressing the challenges faced by his homeland. He further noted that poetry not only highlights these issues but also offers innovative solutions that could be applied across other African nations.

The launch served as a powerful reminder of the role of art in social commentary and change. The other notable personalities present at the book launch included Dr. Ferdinand Nabiswa (Dean SDMHA), Dr. David Braza (Associate Dean SASS), Dr. Rose Opiyo (Coordinator- Strategic Plan), and several student leaders. As 'Awakening Junub' becomes available for purchase, it stands as a call to action for the next generation of leaders to confront the challenges facing their communities and strive for a brighter future.
