The University Academic Staff Union (UASU)- MMUST Chapter on 26th November 2024, held its Annual General Meeting (AGM), to address key issues and strengthen members’ welfare. This AGM, which took place amidst growing concerns over academic staff welfare, was attended by the Vice Chancellor- Prof. Solomon Shibairo, UASU officials, and academic staff. The AGM provided a platform for the dons to engage in open discussions on matters ranging from staff welfare to the quality of education offered at the University. The meeting took place at the UASU office in Milimani-Kakamega.
Speaking during the AGM, Prof. Shibairo applauded the Union for prudent financial management, as depicted in the financial statements presented. He acknowledged the dons’ contributions towards the University’s goals and assured continued engagement with UASU to address staff welfare.

The Chapter Secretary General - Mr. Robinson Oduma pointed out that they have had various consultative meetings with the Management which have yielded into positive outcomes such as payment of part-time claims. However, the SG challenged his counterparts to be extra-vigilant on matters that touch on their professionalism and to consult whenever they are uncertain to avoid disciplinary cases.

“We have successfully concluded negotiations on the 2017- 2021 Local Collective Bargaining Agreement and shared the contents of the CBA with you. I am glad to report that we agreed with our partners, the University Council, on all the pending items such as workload, retirement age, and the two allowances (Car/Commuter Allowances and Book Allowances). Additionally, we secured an extra benefit for members, the Research Support money for which our members are already benefiting. We thank members for their input that enabled us to have a very good CBA document,” stated Mr. Oduma.
Additionally, the Ag. Chairperson MMUST Chapter- Mr. Ronald Wamalwa emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach between the University Management and the dons. “The Union leadership has remained focused and by constantly engaging Management, we have achieved several deliverables as far as the welfare of our members is concerned. These include a promotion, retention of our retirement age at 74 years through a court injunction, and conclusion of internal CBA 2017-2021 awaiting registration,” said Mr. Wamalwa.

Presenting the financial report, UASU MMUST Treasurer, Dr. Angeline Savala highlighted the Union’s achievements in managing its resources effectively over the past year. She detailed the Union’s budgetary allocations, savings, and expenditures in various staff welfare programs.
“We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing. In our opinion, proper books of accounts have been kept by the Union. The Union’s statement of financial position and income statement are in agreement with the books of account,” said the Auditor, CPA Francis Kirugu.

The other Chapter officials present at the AGM were; Dr. Philip Amuyunzu (Organizing Secretary), Dr. Geoffrey Musera (Delegate & Ag. Dep. Sec) Committee Members; Dr. Joyce Kasili, Mr. Moses Adama (Trustee), Prof. Peter Bukhala (Trustee), Prof. Kubasu Kwashe (Trustee) and Delegates; Mr. Peter Nandikove, Dr. Christine Akinyi, and Dr. Ababu Musera.
The AGM concluded with a series of resolutions, including a renewed commitment to engage with the University administration to address the concerns raised. UASU officials pledged to continue advocating for better working conditions, enhanced academic resources, and a more inclusive approach to education. The members commended the transparency and efficiency with which the funds have been managed.
