Commission for University Education Conducts Needs Assessment of Undergraduate Common Curricula Units (CCUs) to Enhance Effectiveness of the Courses Offered by MMUST

A delegation from the Commission for University Education (CUE) on 29 April 2024, visited Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) to carry out a Needs Assessment of general undergraduate Common Curricula Units (CCUS) offered by the University. This exercise aimed to ensure that the Common courses taught at the university equip students with the requisite skills for the global workplace. The team was led by the Head of Research- CUE, Dr. Dorcas Omukhulu, and accompanied by Mr. Hudson Nandokha, Mr. Clifford Njuguna, and Ms. Lucia Muia.

They paid a courtesy call to the Ag. Vice Chancellor- Prof Charles Mutai who expressed delight at their visit saying that the dynamic realm of higher education calls for needs assessment which has emerged as an indispensable instrument for institutions to align their curriculum with the requirements of their students, faculties, stakeholders, and the job market.

The Director, of Curriculum Review and Development, Dr. Joyce Kagendo received the CUE officers. They later met with a section of students and lecturers who teach the Common Courses to gather valuable insights that can be used to address existing gaps and enhance the overall effectiveness of the courses offered. The members of staff present during the meeting included the Registrar (Academic and Affairs)- Prof. Judah Ndiku; Deputy Registrar (Academic and Affairs)- Mr. Zablon Obengo; Deans of Schools; Eng. Prof. Bernadette Sabuni, Dr. Joseph Owino, Dr. Daniel Otanga, Prof. Moses Poipoi, Dr. Anthony Sifuna, Dr. Vitalis Ogema, Mr. John Arudo and ICT Manager- Mr. Geoffrey Kones.

The discussions during the consultative meeting revealed that this is an important exercise and that it is crucial to recognize disparities between the present learning systems and the swift technological progress and evolving educational paradigms.

In this era characterized by technological dynamism, needs assessment is critical in ensuring higher education institutions’ efficacy,  sustained relevance, and adaptability.
